OpenAI removes “her” voice from ChatGPT

OpenAI has removed a female voice named Sky from ChatGPT. Users found it too familiar, resembling Scarlett Johansson. This development began a few months before the release of GPT-4. OpenAI approached Johansson to use her voice for the AI model. She declined. The company then used a similar-sounding voice.

CEO Sam Altman issued a statement. “The voice of Sky is not Scarlett Johansson’s, and it was never intended to resemble hers.” He added, “Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky’s voice in our products. We apologize to Ms. Johansson for not communicating better.”

The decision follows complaints from users and Johansson’s representatives. They argued the voice was too close to Johansson’s. OpenAI acted to avoid any further misunderstanding.

The incident highlights the challenges in developing AI voices. Companies must balance innovation with respect for public figures. OpenAI’s swift action aims to maintain trust and respect in the industry.

Sky’s removal is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy. The company seeks to ensure ethical use of technology. This includes transparency and respecting individual rights. The AI community is watching closely. OpenAI’s handling of the situation sets a precedent for future developments.

Johansson has not made a public statement on the matter. Her representatives acknowledge OpenAI’s apology. They hope this serves as a reminder to tech companies. Respecting individual rights is crucial.

OpenAI continues to refine its models. They aim to prevent similar issues. The focus remains on creating innovative yet respectful technology. The Sky incident will likely influence future AI voice projects.

This story underscores the delicate balance in AI development. Companies must innovate while respecting public figures and ethical guidelines. OpenAI’s response shows a commitment to this balance. The AI community will watch how this influences future projects.
