Morocco turned tables on European heavyweights Spain as they registered a historic win in the Round of 16 match in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022. After a goalless full-time play, the North African side spring to action in the penalties finding the net three out of four times to peg Span back, while Morocco’s goalkeeper Bono put his hand up and denied the European side a single opportunity to score a goal as the Walid Regragui side won the game 3-0.
The attacking midfielder Abdelhamid Sabiri found the net for Morocco first up while Hakim Ziyech scored the second goal. Badr Benoun missed out on the third penalty before Achraf Hakimi sealed the deal for Morocco. Unfortunately for Spain, all three of Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquests missed their respective penalty kicks and the 2010 champions were subjected to a heartbreaking loss in the Round of 16. It has been a tournament of upsets and after a sensational run in the main round, Morocco stunned Spain and will now face Portugal in the quarter-finals.As the Education City Stadium was filled with celebrations by the Africans, the Morocco players decided to throw their support behind Palestine after the win. The players raised the Palestinian flag despite their improved relations with Israel, who are in conflict with Palestine.
