The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance was inching closer to the 300-mark, but appeared to be falling short of the overwhelming majority forecast by most exit polls, as vote count for the 543 Lok Sabha seats heated up on Tuesday. Defying predictions, the opposition INDIA bloc was putting up a spirited fight with a strong showing in the bellwether state of Uttar Pradesh.
Latest trends show the NDA, which already has one seat in its kitty after the BJP candidate won unopposed in Surat, leading on 295 seats, a far cry from the ambitious target of “400 paar”. On the other hand, the INDIA bloc was ahead in 231 seats as of 4 pm.
The Congress seemed to be on course to secure over 95 seats, bettering its 2019 tally of 52 by a long shot. The BJP, which bagged 303 on its own last time, was leading 240 seats. Others, including regional outfits and Independents, were ahead in 17 seats.
