Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Resident Doctors End Strike After Meeting with JP Nadda

The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has called off its strike, which was in response to the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The decision to end the strike came after a meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old trainee doctor was discovered murdered in the seminal hall of the hospital last week, with an autopsy later confirming that she had been raped. This horrific incident led to widespread protests across Kolkata, with members of the medical community joining in solidarity and announcing a strike.

Following their meeting with JP Nadda, FORDA President Aviral Mathur stated that the Union Minister had assured them of measures to provide a safer working environment for doctors. Mathur mentioned that their reformulated demands were presented to the minister, who promised that these would be addressed in a time-bound manner. Additionally, a committee involving doctors is to be formed to oversee the implementation of these measures.

As a result of these assurances, the strike was officially called off.
