India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a new toll policy through the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates Collection) Amendment Rules, 2024, allowing private vehicles to travel toll-free for up to 20 km on national highways and expressways. This exemption applies to vehicles equipped with a functional Global Navigation Satellite System. If the journey exceeds 20 km, toll charges will be calculated based on the actual distance traveled.
Additionally, specific lanes will be designated for GNSS-equipped vehicles. Vehicles entering these lanes without a functional GNSS will be penalized, paying double the applicable toll at that plaza. This move aims to streamline toll collections and incentivize the use of GNSS technology.
