Himachal on ‘yellow’ alert: As fears of flash flood and landslides continue to plague the hill state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “yellow” signal for Himachal Pradesh, anticipating moderate to heavy rainfall. According to the regional weather service, various districts throughout the state may see periods of heavy rainfal.
“There is a possibility of heavy rainfall in parts of the districts of Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kullu, Una, Bilaspur and Kangra. We have issued a yellow alert for 24 and 25 August…,” IMD Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma told news agency.
Sharma, however, stated that starting on August 26, the state will get some reprieve.
According to the IMD scientist, Himachal Pradesh had 804mm of rain from June through August, 41% higher than typical. The sole exception was less rain than usual at Lahaul Spiti.
“From 26 August, the weather will change. Districts of plains and middle areas will receive light to moderate rains… From 26 to 30 August, the activity will reduce…,” he said.
Himachal Pradesh has had numerous cloudbursts and landslides during this monsoon season, which have resulted in numerous fatalities, swept away automobiles, and destroyed structures. According to a directive from the state transport department, a total of 30 routes, including those to Mandi, Kullu, and Dharmshala, have been suspended as a result of the state’s heavy rains.
In the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, at least eight abandoned structures collapsed on Thursday due to a landslip. Due to developing cracks, the structures in Anni, Kullu, were vacated and deemed hazardous last week. Since the beginning of the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh this year, at least 238 individuals have perished in climate-related catastrophes; however, none were killed when they collapsed on Thursday.
