Taxation on gaming: Even though states like Delhi and Goa asked for a review, the decision to impose a 28% tax on the full-face value of bets placed on online gaming will go into effect on October 1, according to Union finance minister. The GST Council, the highest-ranking body of the new indirect tax system, which is made up of the Union finance minister and members from all states, discussed the language of adjustments that will be required to enable taxing online gambling.

Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister, claimed that the decision was not made unanimously, as it had been when the GST on lotteries was changed, with certain states expressing opposition while the majority demanded that the decision from the previous Council meeting be put into effect as soon as possible. Now, it’s anticipated that the new tax charge will go into force on October 1. The implementation would be reviewed six months later.

Officials are currently working on the legal adjustments, which are anticipated to be discussed during the current monsoon session of Parliament. After that, the states will enact the corresponding amendments to their state GST legislation.

Tamil Nadu, which has already banned online gambling, has also demanded that the law be changed to reflect the ban and prevent online gambling from being taxable in the state.
