The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain for several states and Union territories, including Delhi, today. An orange alert has been issued for the national capital for today and tomorrow, despite no rain on Monday as previously predicted.
In a recent tweet, the IMD noted that satellite imagery shows convective clouds, indicating a potential for rain along with isolated thunderstorms and lightning over Delhi, Punjab, and their neighboring states and UTs in the northwest region. The forecast came on the back of the heels of torrential rainfall in the national capital on Friday, wherein Delhi broke an 88-year-old rain record. The city recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Friday, more than three times the June rainfall average of 74.1 mm and the highest for the month since 1936.
