The filming of the Hindi-language drama series “Maharani” in the Legislative Assembly of Jammu has drawn criticism from former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah. In a tweet earlier today, Abdullah expressed disappointment, criticising the decision to allow actors to use the assembly as a backdrop for a television series.

In his tweet, Abdullah expressed grief over the degradation of the historically significant symbol of democracy. He stated that the Legislative Assembly, where elected representatives deliberated on crucial matters, has been reduced to a set for TV dramas. What a shame that the BJP-driven government in J&K has allowed this. The symbol of democracy is now a sorry state of affairs.

This sentiment raises concerns about the perceived decline in democratic values within the region. Abdullah’s tweet underscores the historical importance of the assembly, which, in the past, served as a forum for elected representatives to govern and legislate on matters of great importance.

The ongoing filming project, conceptualised by Subhash Kapoor and directed by Karan Sharma, has transformed the assembly into a set for the political drama series. Episode 3 of “Maharani,” shot in the Legislative Assembly complex at Jammu, portrays pivotal moments in the political landscape inspired by Bihar in the 1990s.

While Abdullah’s tweet resonates with concerns about the sanctity of democratic institutions, authorities defend the decision to allow the filming, citing potential benefits for tourism and the film industry in the newly designated union territory. The government has pledged full support to the project, emphasising the involvement of around 100 local artists in contributing to the cultural and artistic landscape of the region.

As the debate unfolds, Abdullah’s tweet stands as a critique of the decision, reflecting a broader discussion on the balance between preserving democratic ideals and exploring opportunities for artistic expression in the evolving cultural narrative of Jammu and Kashmir.

In response to Omar Abdullah’s tweet, various discussions ensued. Some individuals delved into the topic of dynasty politics involving the Muftis and Abdullahs, while others focused on criticisms of the BJP government for perceived insensitivity in allowing such occurrences.
