Atiq-Ashraf murder case, SC to hear plea seeking independent probe on April 24

The Supreme Court will hear on April 24 the demand for constitution of an expert committee in the murder of gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed in the presence of the police.

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking formation of an independent inquiry committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to probe the murder of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed in the presence of police.

The Supreme Court will hear this petition on April 24. In the petition, questions have also been raised on a total of 183 encounters in the Yogi government so far.

Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur has also filed a letter petition in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI inquiry into the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother under the supervision of the Supreme Court or the High Court. Amitabh Thakur has said in the petition that ‘even if Atiq Ahmed and his brother are criminals, but the manner in which they were killed shows ample possibility of state funding of this incident’.

Order to release Akhil Gogoi on bail

The Supreme Court has directed the release of Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi on bail. The court has said that till the hearing against Akhil Gogoi, he will be on bail but he will have to follow the terms and conditions imposed by the special court on the member of the assembly.

Explain that Akhil Gogoi is facing trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 in connection with the anti-CAA protests. During the hearing, the counsel for Akhil Gogoi said that this is clearly a case of political vendetta.

However, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the National Investigation Agency, strongly opposed these arguments.
