The US has finally announced its ambassador to India, the name of the designated US ambassador to India has been approved after a delay of almost two and a half years.
According to American and Indian media reports, the US Senate approved the name of Eric Garcetti as ambassador to India, his name was approved by 52 votes. Eric Garcetti was named as the US ambassador to India two and a half years ago. Eric Garcetti has been the Mayor of Los Angeles.
Garcetti, a loyalist of US President Joe Biden, was one of the rising stars of the Democratic Party until five years ago, but was hit hard by scandals in the last year of his 9-year long mayoralty.
According to Indian Express, it was difficult for Eric Garcetti to get a place in the Biden cabinet due to the scandals, he had to pay the price of the scandals in the form of losing his ambassadorship.
The way for Garcetti to go to New Delhi was cleared when the US Senate last week passed a ‘clobber’ motion on his case. This motion is carried when the issue has the support of a supermajority and the minority members limit further discussion on the issue, means the debate is ended and a vote is taken on the issue.
Who is Eric Garcetti?
Garcetti, 52, was raised in the San Fernando Valley and earned a BA and MA from Columbia University, according to Garcetti’s website. He is married to Amy Elaine Wakeland, with whom he has a daughter.
He studied at Oxford and the London School of Economics as a Rhodes Scholar and taught at Occidental College and USC. He was an officer in the US Navy Reserve for 12 years, and is also an avid jazz pianist and photographer, according to the website.
He became mayor of Los Angeles in 2013, and served until 2022, making him the city’s youngest mayor in 100 years, and the first Jewish person to hold the chair.
