A 14-year-old rape victim’s 30-week pregnancy was ordered to be immediately medically terminated by the Supreme Court on Monday. Additionally, it overturned a Bombay High Court decision that prohibited the girl’s pregnancy from being medically terminated, concluding that each and every hour was vital for her.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud ordered Sion Hospital to constitute a team to conduct the medical termination of the pregnancy.
The bench said that the hospital would ensure the minor was safely taken to the medical facility and that the Maharashtra government had agreed to bear the expenses of the procedure.
