World Athletics bans transgender women athletes

World Athletics, the international governing body for athletics, has banned transgender women from competing in the female category at international events. It also tightened testosterone restrictions for other athletes, the governing body said on Thursday.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said transgender athletes who have gone through male puberty will not be allowed to compete in female world ranking competitions from March 31. He added that the decision to exclude trans women athletes was guided by “the overarching need to protect the female category”.
