WhatsApp is in the process of creating a ‘Passkey’ feature to enhance the safety and security of its platform. This feature is expected to be included in an upcoming app update. According to information from WABetaInfo, a website specializing in updates and news related to the Meta-owned messaging service, the Passkey feature was identified in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, labeled as version 2.23.17.5.
What exactly is a Passkey? It’s a concise combination of numbers and characters that serves the purpose of verifying the identity of a user within an application. It functions as a security code, ensuring that only authorized devices can undergo the authentication process.
How does this feature function in this particular context? To provide clarity, WABetaInfo shared a screenshot demonstrating the process. As depicted, the Passkey will offer users a straightforward method to securely sign in, requiring activation through a toggle. It will harness an individual’s fingerprint, facial recognition, or screen lock (depending on user preference) to enable a secure sign-in by confirming their identity.
Moreover, there’s no need for users to commit the Passkey to memory, as it will be securely stored within Google Support Manager.
However, it’s important to note that the feature is still in the development stage and is not yet accessible even to beta testers. This implies that its public release is a considerable time away, with the launch potentially taking place several months down the line.
