Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fielding coach Jonty Rhodes’ heartwarming gesture won hearts in the rain-hit IPL 2023 game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The afternoon match between LSG and CSK had a delayed start due to wet outfield. Rain hit Lucknow when LSG were 125/7 in 19.2 overs. Rhodes immediately offered help to ground staff, bringing the covers to protect the pitch. While the match was eventually called off, Rhodes won millions of hearts with his incredible gesture.
“Jonty Rhodes, always an asset in the field,” Lucknow Super Giants tweeted. Replying to the post, Rhodes said: “Just trying to live up to my supporters signs from the 90’s which claimed that ‘water covers 70% of the earth, and rest is covered by Jonty.”
In the absence of captain KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya led LSG against CSK. Lucknow Super Giants were in all sorts of trouble early on, reeling at 44/5 inside 10 overs. Ayush Badoni, who came in at number seven, foughtback with his fifty in order to take LSG to a respectable total. When Badoni was batting on 59, rain halted the game and eventually the match was abandoned. LSG and CSK shared one point each.
