The United States has called on Pakistan to ensure elections are held in a manner that is free, fair, and on schedule, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law. Responding to Pakistan President Arif Alvi’s communication with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller stated, “Just as we do with countries worldwide, we encourage Pakistan to conduct elections that are free, fair, and held promptly while upholding human rights, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law.”

Miller also urged Pakistani authorities to proceed with the electoral process by Pakistan’s legal framework.

In his letter, Arif Alvi proposed that the polls take place no later than November 6, as Pakistan’s National Assembly was dissolved on August 9. According to Pakistani law, elections should be held within 90 days following the dissolution of the National Assembly.

However, the ECP decided to carry out a new delimitation of constituencies based on the updated census, causing a delay in the elections.

This letter from Arif Alvi marked the fourth instance in which the president corresponded with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja concerning elections in the country.

Regarding the relationship between the US and Pakistan, Mathew Miller remarked, “Pakistan is a crucial partner, and we highly appreciate the ties between our nations, both in terms of governmental relations and people-to-people connections.”
