An official source announced on Wednesday that the draft of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill 2023 has been approved by the Union Cabinet for presentation in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament.
The bill suggests imposing penalties of up to ₹250 crore on entities for each violation of the bill’s norms.
The source stated, “The DPDP bill draft has been approved by the Cabinet and will be presented in the upcoming session of Parliament.”
The monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to take place from July 20 to August 11.
As per the source, the bill encompasses almost all the provisions of the previous draft released by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology for public consultation.
The source clarified that government entities are not exempted entirely under the proposed legislation.
“In case of disputes, the Data Protection Board will make decisions. Citizens will have the right to claim compensation through civil courts. Many aspects will evolve gradually,” explained the source.
Once the law is enacted, individuals will have the right to request information about the collection, storage, and processing of their data, according to the source.
