Jammu, Jan 24 (Gulistan News TV) The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, a monumental initiative that promises to redefine connectivity for Jammu and Kashmir, is all set to be officially inaugurated in the first week of February 2025. This announcement follows the successful trial runs of passenger and freight trains on the route, signaling the near completion of this ambitious project.
In preparation for the grand inauguration, Northern Railways has scheduled trial runs of the state-of-the-art Vande Bharat Express rakes on January 24 and 25. These trials will cover the stretch between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station and Baramulla (BDGM) station. According to an official communiqué issued by Northern Railways’ North Circle, the Firozpur division has been entrusted with managing the trial operations.
Key Highlights of the USBRL Project
The USBRL project, which commenced in 2005-06, has been a technically challenging yet transformative endeavor. Spanning a total of 272 km, the project bridges the treacherous terrains of the Himalayas, linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India.
1. Phased Development
o Qazigund-Baramulla (118 km): This section, connecting major towns in the valley, was inaugurated in October 2009.
o Banihal-Qazigund (18 km): Opened in 2013, featuring the 11.2 km Pir Panjal Tunnel—the longest railway tunnel in India.
o Udhampur-Katra (25 km): Completed in 2014, linking Katra, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, to the national rail network.
2. Engineering Marvels
o The Katra-Banihal section, part of the final phase, includes some of India’s most challenging railway constructions, such as:
Anji Khad Bridge: India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, designed to withstand high winds and seismic activity.
Chenab Bridge: The world’s tallest railway bridge, rising 359 meters above the riverbed.
o These innovations demonstrate India’s engineering prowess in overcoming formidable natural obstacles.
3. Electric Train Trial Success
On January 4, 2025, an electric train trial on the Katra-Banihal section was conducted under the supervision of Chief Administrative Officer Sandeep Gupta. This trial involved inspections of tunnels, bridges, and critical infrastructure, as well as speed testing along the 111-km stretch from Katra to Banihal.
New Security Directives Raise Concerns
Despite the excitement surrounding the project’s completion, Indian Railways has introduced new security measures for passengers traveling to and from Kashmir. Passengers will now be required to de-board at Katra station for security checks before continuing their journey on a separate train. This process, expected to take around an hour, aims to enhance security in the region.
While the directive has been met with criticism from local residents and stakeholders, who were eager for seamless travel on the newly completed network, railway authorities emphasize that these measures are essential to ensure passenger safety.
Regional Impact
The completion of the USBRL project is a historic achievement that holds immense promise for the region:
• Economic Boost: The rail link will facilitate the movement of goods and agricultural produce, providing a significant boost to local businesses and industries.
• Tourism Growth: Improved connectivity is expected to attract more tourists to the scenic Kashmir Valley, benefiting the hospitality sector.
• Strategic Importance: From a national security perspective, the project strengthens the logistical capabilities of the region.
Despite the minor setback posed by the added travel complexities, the USBRL is poised to transform transportation and connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, making it a key driver of the region’s socio-economic growth.
The formal inauguration in February 2025 will mark the culmination of nearly two decades of dedicated efforts to connect one of India’s most remote and picturesque regions with the rest of the country. Gulistan News TV
