The death toll from Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar has risen to 384, with 89 people still reported missing, according to the junta’s latest update. The typhoon, which struck over a week ago, caused severe flooding and landslides across northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar, resulting in hundreds of fatalities throughout the region.
The floods have compounded the suffering in Myanmar, where millions are already displaced due to ongoing conflict following the military coup in 2021. In a rare move, the junta issued an appeal for foreign aid to address the disaster.
The United Nations has reported that approximately 887,000 people have been impacted by the typhoon in Myanmar. The UN’s humanitarian agency (OCHA) noted that severely affected areas face widespread destruction, including damage to homes, water sources, and electricity infrastructure. Roads, bridges, communication networks, schools, and agricultural lands have also sustained significant damage, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
