Tulip Garden sets a record: The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar has been recognised as Asia’s largest such park by the World Book of Records (London).
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri posted on X, formerly Twitter, that there are 1.5 million tulip bulbs in the garden, representing 68 different types.
In addition to praising the garden, Hardeep Singh Puri made an indirect poke at the unrest in the area’s politics.
He said, “Phool aaye, pathar gaye (flowers have come, stones have gone),” referring to earlier occasions when Kashmiri locals would throw stones at the security forces during rallies.
Using X Puri wrote “’Gar firdaus bar-rue zamin ast! The picturesque paradise of tulips in Srinagar enters the World Book of Records as being Asia’s largest! 1.5 million tulip bulbs showcasing an astonishing collection of 68 distinct tulip varieties- attracting 100,000 visitors!”
The Union Minister claimed that a lakh people have visited the lovely park. With almost 3.70 lakh visitors this year, the garden smashed all prior records for tourist arrivals.
The 30-hectare tulip garden is situated in Srinagar between the Dal Lake and the Zabarwan hills.
The garden, originally known as Siraj Bagh, includes beautiful displays of tulips as well as other springtime blooms including hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens.
The park was established in 2007 with the intention of promoting floriculture and tourism in the Kashmir Valley, according to Srinagar Tourism. It has seven terraces and is constructed in a terraced manner on sloping ground
In an effort to promote tourism, the government of Jammu and Kashmir holds an annual tulip festival with the goal of showcasing the variety of tulips in the garden. Every year, it takes place at the start of the spring season.
