In the midst of a nationwide increase in tomato prices, McDonald‘s in Delhi has released a notice stating that it cannot serve its products with tomatoes due to “seasonal issues” in sourcing. A Twitter user named Aditya Saha shared an image of the notice, and it quickly garnered attention on social media. One user pointed out that the situation is challenging due to a supply-demand gap, which restaurants and quick-service chains usually do not consider as they operate on fixed rates throughout the year.
McDonald’s India – North and East issued an official statement explaining that despite their efforts, they are currently unable to procure tomatoes that meet their strict quality standards due to seasonal issues. They assured customers that this is a temporary problem and they are actively exploring solutions to reintroduce tomatoes to their menu soon. However, the brand did not specifically mention the high price of tomatoes as the reason behind their absence from the menu.
Tomato prices have witnessed a significant surge in northern regions, with prices ranging from ₹130 to ₹155 per kg in Delhi, Kolkata, and Uttar Pradesh. Reports indicate that the price of tomatoes has reached ₹150 in Moradabad, while the rest of the country continues to experience price hikes. In Delhi’s Safal store, tomatoes are being sold at ₹129 per kg.
