Tigers occupying new areas, shows census report; expect a bigger jump in final big cat count, say experts

The latest tiger census report shows tigers occupying new areas and says the number of big cats in the wild has grown at least by 200 to 3,167 in 2022 from the last count in 2018. Experts say this is a conservative estimate and the final estimates, when they are out in two months, are likely to show a bigger leap. The Status of Tigers 2022 report gives a broad picture of the population of big cats in India but leaves out some details for later. A clearer picture will emerge in two months, lead author of the report and scientist at the Wildlife Institute of India Qamar Qureshi told IndiaToday.in on Monday.

The “part report” was published to mark the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger in April.

What is most exciting is the latest report says tigers have occupied new areas in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. There is photographic evidence of tigers in new areas in Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, too.

The latest tiger census report was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
