T20 World Cup: Australia knocked out in Super 8 as Afghanistan into first-ever semis

Australia has been knocked out in the Super 8 stages of the T20 World Cup 2024 following Afghanistan’s historic win against Bangladesh at St. Vincent to qualify for the semi-finals for the first time. Australia had their backs against the wall after their loss to India, as they had just 2 points in their bag following the 3 games.

Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first against Bangladesh at St. Vincent. Despite having their most successful opening pair, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan struggled initially. The duo managed to score 54 runs in the first 9 overs, but Bangladesh tightened their grip after Zadran’s dismissal.

Gurbaz attempted to accelerate the innings, but regular wickets hindered Afghanistan’s progress. Rishad Hossain was particularly effective, taking 3 wickets for 26 runs in his 4 overs. Afghanistan’s score plummeted from 84 for 2 to 93 for 5. However, a late surge by Rashid Khan, who scored 19 runs off 10 balls with 3 sixes, helped Afghanistan reach a competitive total.

Bangladesh’s chase got off to a good start as Litton got them going but wickets started to fall at the other end. It was Naveen, who got a double-strike, to give Afghanistan the upper hand at first before a rain break happened.
