On August 11, 2023, petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged in major cities. In Delhi, petrol was priced at ₹96.72 per litre, while diesel was sold at ₹89.62 per litre.

In Mumbai, petrol and diesel were priced at ₹106.31 per litre and ₹94.27 per litre, respectively. Here are the fuel prices for other major cities:

  • Kolkata: Petrol ₹106.03, Diesel ₹92.76
  • Chennai: Petrol ₹102.74, Diesel ₹94.33
  • Ahmedabad: Petrol ₹96.89, Diesel ₹92.17

In India, oil marketing companies revise petrol and diesel prices daily at 6 am. The prices are determined by the companies and monitored by the petroleum and natural gas ministry’s analysis cell.

Previously, fuel prices were revised every fortnight. However, since 2017, rates have been adjusted daily. Fuel prices in India are not subject to the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The Centre collects excise duty, while state governments collect Value Added Tax (VAT). As VAT varies by state, fuel pricing differs accordingly.

Last year, the Centre reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel, leading to price drops of ₹9.5 per litre and ₹7 per litre, respectively. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced the reduction on social media, urging state governments to follow suit and provide relief to the public.
