Onions in Delhi to be sold at Rs25/kg: From Monday, Delhi residents will be able to purchase onions from the government’s buffer stock at a discounted price of Rs 25 per kg according to the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF).

According to the NCCF’s chief official, this action aims to relieve consumers from the excessive prices of this kitchen need.

The NCCF has been given the responsibility of selling buffer onions to consumers after previously selling tomatoes at discounted prices on behalf of the federal government.

The government has also chosen to purchase an additional 2 lakh tonnes of onions this year for the buffer, which will have a 3 lakh tonnes buffer stock for the 2023–24 fiscal year.

The choice was made shortly after the government levied a 40% levy on onions exported in an effort to contain soaring cost.

Around 10 mobile vans will be sent out on Monday to start selling buffer onions to consumers in Delhi. Through these vans and two retail locations in the nation’s capital, located at Nehru Place and Okhla, the subsidised rate of Rs 25 per kg would be made available.

Additionally, NCCF intends to start selling onions online through the ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) platform; the specifics are still being worked out.
In retail marketplaces, buffer onions will be offered at a subsidised price of Rs 25 per kg in addition to being sold at mandi rates in wholesale markets. Delhi will launch retail sales on Monday, and the other four states will do the same in two days.
