13 February (Gulistan News TV): In a significant statement, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain Mir, assured that the evolving criminal justice system will focus on being people-centric, prioritizing transparency and accountability in law enforcement. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an awareness program, SSP Mir emphasized the importance of the ongoing changes in the criminal laws and their impact on the general public. As reported by the News, the awareness program, which was conducted with the objective of educating the masses, aimed to inform people about the major legal transition from colonial-era laws to a more democratic framework. The program highlighted the shift in India’s criminal law from the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

SSP Mir elaborated on the significance of this transformation, explaining that the move from the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which was rooted in colonial law, to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) marks a shift towards a more democratic and justice-oriented framework. “The shift from ‘penal’ to ‘Nyaya’ represents a move from punitive measures to a system focused on justice, making it more responsive to the needs of the citizens,” he stated. The new law, which reflects India’s evolving democratic values, seeks to ensure that justice is not only served but also delivered in a manner that is fair, transparent, and accountable. The people-centric approach is aimed at fostering trust between the public and law enforcement agencies, ensuring that the criminal justice system works for the benefit of all citizens rather than focusing solely on punitive action.

SSP Mir emphasized that these changes will help in addressing the grievances of the public and will work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable system, where the rights and welfare of individuals are safeguarded while maintaining law and order. The awareness program, which attracted a positive response, was an effort to bridge the gap between law enforcement agencies and the public, making them aware of their rights and the changing legal landscape. As the new laws are gradually implemented, law enforcement will continue to educate the public to ensure smooth adaptation to these reforms.
