In a major crackdown on illegal mining and transportation of minerals, police in Srinagar have seized 12 tippers/dumpers carrying illegally extracted materials, including sand, gravel, and clay. The seized vehicles were being used to dump these materials in marshy and wetland areas, causing significant ecological damage.
According to media the seized vehicles are six tippers with registration numbers JK13B 8562, JK01M 7021, JK04A 2603, JK03G 3175, JK01M 4081, and JK01J 3021, found transporting materials from Bemina, Budgam, and surrounding areas. Three tippers, including JK04A 2063, JK13A 5790, and JK04B 0876, were caught in Qamarwari during landfilling operations. Similarly, three heavy vehicles, JK03D 1146, JK02AK 2399, and JK011 4184, were intercepted at Shalteng en route to Srinagar.
Police, in collaboration with the Geology and Mining Department, have taken action under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR) against the offenders. Additionally, three vehicles have been penalized for traffic violations under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The police have issued a stern warning to those engaged in unauthorized mining and transportation of minerals, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the environment and preserving wetlands. These illegal activities not only harm the ecology but also pose serious health risks to local residents.
The Srinagar police have reiterated their determination to continue efforts to curb illegal practices and safeguard the city’s environment.
