Spain defeats England by 1-0: Spain won their first FIFA World Cup 2023 title on Sunday, 20 August, defeating England 1-0 in the final in Sydney. At halftime, Spain’s captain Olga Carmona gave Spain a 1-0 lead over England in the final, which proved decisive. Carmona scored in the 29th minute after England lost possession in midfield, and Spain soon replied to win at Stadium Australia.
Both England and Spain were making their first appearances in a Women’s World Cup final. England had not lost a single match since Serina Weighman took over as coach. In the run-up to the final, England had won 35 games and drawn four.
Aitana Bonmati and Teresa Abelleira controlled the game from the Spanish midfield, and the margin of victory would have been higher had England custodian Mary Earps not saved Jennifer Hermoso’s second-half penalty.
“It’s the best feeling of my life,” Hermoso, who was crying, added.
“We played the football we wanted to play, but I still believe we are unaware of what we have accomplished.”
After England was dispossessed in midfield, Abelleira curled a fantastic cross-field pass to Mariona Caldentey, who slid the ball forward to Carmona, and La Roja seized the lead shortly before the half-hour mark.
The left back drove into the area and unleashed an angled shot that soared past Earps’ hands and into the far corner of the net.
The goal seemed to knock the wind out of England, and Spain dominated the rest of the half, with Paralluelo pinging a shot off the post right before halftime.
Thousands of spectators came at Sydney’s Stadium Australia hours before kickoff, with troupes of drummers and stilt walkers creating a festival atmosphere.
