Union Home Minister Amit Shah today inaugurated Maa Sharda Temple in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. During this, he said that whenever I come to the valley, I will start my journey only after visiting Maa Sharda.

Today, on the occasion of Chaitra Navratri, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated Maa Sharda Devi temple built in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir through video conference. The temple has been built with the help of Shri Sringeri Math and Seva Sharda Samiti. Inaugurating the temple, Amit Shah said that today the temple of Sharda Maa has been opened for devotees. Today I am not in Kupwara, but whenever I go to Kashmir now, I will start my journey by taking blessings of Maa Sharda.

This temple of Maa Sharda Devi is built in Teetwal village of Kupwara, just 500 meters away from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). According to reports, in the year 1947, the Mubarak Yatra was started from here to visit Sharda Peeth, although it was later closed in 1948 after tribal attacks and partition. Sharda Peeth is in PoK, which has been damaged. With the construction of this temple, now the age-old pilgrimage will start again.

In July last year, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had mentioned Maa Sharda Temple while addressing a program of Kargil Vijay Diwas. Rajnath Singh had said that how can it be that Baba Amarnath in the form of Shiva is with India, but the temple of Shakti Swarupa Maa Sharda remains near the LoC.

Please tell that Sharda Peeth is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peeths. It is considered to be the abode of Maa Saraswati. It is near the LoC, where Neelam (Kishanganga) rivers meet Madhumati and Sargun. It is said that Sharda Peeth was built in the Kushan Empire in the first century. Academics say that the temple was built by King Lalitaditya. There are reportedly no deities in the temple. Significantly, Kashmiri Pandits have been demanding a corridor like Kartarpur for Sharda Peeth for a long time. The residents of Titwal village had also donated some of their land to the committee for the construction of the temple, in which people from the Muslim community were also involved. A mosque and a gurudwara are also being constructed about 136 km away from the ancient site.
