In 2021 Sanjay hired a local boatman and saw how badly the 21 Jain terracottatemples, at Telkupi in Bengal’s Purulia district, had eroded over time. This area, along with most of the temples situated there, was submerged in 1959 because of the construction of a dam across the Damodar river at Panchet.

Sanjay says:”It’s a beautiful place and I wanted to draw people’s attention to a piece of our culture we’re losing. As a photographer, I can’t preserve such heritage, but if I can show it and move people, maybe someone will be able to.”

“As a travel photographer, I have been telling visual stories of different parts of India for more than two decades. My journey is ongoing and I’ve always striven to discover various known and unknown facets of this country. For that, one one needs to walk off the beaten track,” he added.

My objective is to create an imagery that tells a story – in texture, and in light and shadow – to form a unique blend, which is spiritually as well as mentally rewarding says Sanjay Das.
