Riots in New York: A famous online influencer-organized meeting in New York drew an unusually big audience on Friday and devolved into violence, injuring several individuals, causing a significant police response.
At least 2,000 people gathered immediately on Union Square and nearby streets in the hopes of seeing Cenat, who has millions of followers on Twitch, Youtube, Instagram and other social media platforms.
It all started with a post on Instagram from Kai Cenat, 21, inviting supporters to meet him in lower Manhattan for a live-streamed event where he would dish out presents including PlayStation 5 game consoles.
As the streets erupted, young men began throwing things from a neighbouring construction site at individuals in the throng, and police footage showed rioters approaching and obstructing cars, with young men kicking and smashing several of them. “They’re throwing tear gas out there,” Kai Cenat said during a live-streaming as the chaos unfolded. We will not remain silent until it is safe. Everyone for himself, man, it’s a fight out there.
It took a thousand police officers to disperse the unplanned assembly in the end. Several persons were detained. Kai Cenat was arrested and charged with inciting a riot and unlawful assembly after announcing a PlayStation 5 giveaway, which drew thousands to New York City’s Union Square Park.
