Realme Disables Controversial Data Collection Feature Amid Privacy Concerns

Realme has initiated the rollout of a new software update for certain models in response to reports and user allegations regarding a controversial feature. The feature in question was accused of collecting personal data from Realme devices without users’ knowledge or consent. Realme’s action involves disabling this feature through the software update.

The software update has already been provided to the recently-launched 11 Pro and 11 Pro+ smartphones. The update automatically deactivates the ‘Enhanced Intelligent Services’ feature, which was brought to public attention by a Twitter user. Following the update, the description of the feature has also been modified.

The revised description now states that the ‘Enhanced Intelligent Services’ feature is turned off by default, and users have the option to enable or disable it. Previously, the description mentioned the collection of app usage statistics, calendar events, and data on unread messages and calls.

Realme’s decision to take this action stems from a tweet posted on June 16 by Twitter user Rishi Bagree. In the tweet, Bagree shared a screenshot showing the feature enabled by default, capturing user data such as call logs, SMS, and location information. The user questioned whether this data was being sent to China. This tweet caught the attention of Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State (MoS) for Electronics and Technology, prompting intervention.

In response to the concerns raised, Realme issued an official statement emphasizing their commitment to user privacy protection. The statement clarified that the ‘Enhanced Intelligent Services’ feature can be manually enabled or disabled based on user preferences. Additionally, Realme asserted that the company complies with local laws and regulations regarding privacy.

Overall, Realme’s actions involve rolling out a software update to disable the controversial ‘Enhanced Intelligent Services’ feature, modifying its description, and addressing user privacy concerns by reiterating their adherence to applicable laws and regulations.
