Rahul Gandhi sentenced to 2 years by Surat court, gets bail, case related to comment on ‘Modi surname’

Rahul Gandhi has been convicted by the District Court of Surat, Gujarat, in a criminal defamation case filed in 2019 containing ‘Modi surname’.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison by the District Court of Surat, Gujarat, in a criminal defamation case filed in 2019 containing the ‘Modi surname’. However, later Rahul Gandhi got bail from the court. This matter is related to the comment given by Rahul Gandhi regarding ‘Modi surname’. Rahul Gandhi was granted bail for 30 days and allowed to appeal against the decision in the High Court. Rahul Gandhi reached Surat this morning and was received by top party leaders in the state.

The case was registered under sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code. Rahul Gandhi appeared in Surat court in October 2021 to record his statement. Arjun Modhwadia said on Thursday, “Truth is tested and harassed, but truth alone wins. Many false cases have been filed against Gandhi, but he will come out of it all. We will get justice.

Rahul Gandhi has given a tweet regarding the decision of the Surat court. Quoting the quote of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.  He wrote, “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to achieve it.”

BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi has welcomed the Surat court’s decision. the decision to convict Rahul Gandhi in a 2019 defamation case over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname. The court convicted Rahul Gandhi and sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment before granting him bail for 30 days to appeal against the court’s decision in a higher court. Sushil Modi said in a special conversation with NDTV, “I welcome the court’s decision. I am also a Modi. I also felt insulted by Rahul Gandhi’s comment.” Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar Sushil Modi said that he too has filed a defamation case against the Congress leader in Patna. He said, “I have also filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi in Patna. I hope that I too will get justice.”

The case against Rahul has been registered over his remark in which he had allegedly said, “Why all thieves have the same surname as Modi?” Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was present in the Surat District Court when the verdict was pronounced in this case. Earlier, he had said that whatever punishment someone gives him, he will accept it.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejrival supports Rahul Gandhi

Aam Aadmi Party convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal supported Rahul Gandhi. He said that there is a conspiracy to eliminate non-BJP leaders and parties. There is a difference of opinion with the Congress, but it is not right to implicate Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case like this. We respect the court, but disagree with the judgement.

Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer Kirit Panwala told that the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma had last week heard the arguments of both the parties and fixed the date of March 23 for pronouncement of the verdict.
