Rahul Gandhi to return as MP after Supreme Court relief

Rahul Gandhi to return: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, was given the go-ahead to rejoin the Lower House Monday by the Lok Sabha administration. The Supreme Court had last week put a hold on his conviction for criminal defamation. Rahul is expected to speak during tomorrow’s Lok Sabha debate on the no-confidence motion, according to the Congress.

The opposition party criticised the BJP on Sunday for the delay in restoring Rahul’s membership in the Lok Sabha and warned that if it wasn’t done today, he could file a case with the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Rahul is expected to speak during tomorrow’s Lok Sabha debate on the no-confidence motion, according to the Congress.

Rahul Gandhi return to the legislature is not without controversy, though. Gandhi was on “thin ice,” according to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), because of the multiple lawsuits still pending against him. The procedure of restoring a leader’s right to vote in parliament can occasionally be drawn out. Mohammed Faizal, a Lakshadweep MP, was reinstated after more than a month, despite a Kerala High Court judgement earlier this year to freeze his sentence.

Rahul Gandhi’s reinstatement as an MP is now being processed. All that is required is for Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to sign the completed documentation. This acceptance is expected to occur today. The Congress is prepared to file a lawsuit if there is any delay. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Congressman, claimed on Saturday that he had handed the Speaker all the paperwork necessary to have Rahul Gandhi’s exclusion from the Lok Sabha revoked and that his membership should be promptly reinstated.
