In a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him for his alleged ‘Modi surname’ remarks, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was found guilty by a court in Surat.
The Surat District Court delivered the verdict in response to a complaint filed by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi regarding Rahul Gandhi’s alleged remarks of “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” in 2019, finding Rahul Gandhi guilty of criminal defamation.
Rahul Gandhi had allegedly made the remarks about Modi’s surname during a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma concluded hearing final arguments from both sides last week in the four-year-old defamation case, and it set March 23 as the date to pronounce its judgment.
