The Punjab Police registered a murder case against an unidentified person over the death of Shubhkaran Singh (22), who was a native of Bathinda, on February 21. Twelve security personnel were also injured in clashes with the protesting farmers at Khanauri.
A candlelight vigil was held by various NGOs in Amritsar in tribute to Shubhkaran Singh.
The registration of the FIR brings to an end the stalemate between the farmers and the Punjab government and paves the way for post-mortem of the body. Farmer leaders were adamant that an FIR be registered before allowing the post-mortem.
Shubhkaran Singh’s body is being kept at a mortuary of Rajindra Hospital in Patiala and is likely to be cremated today.
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the murder case was registered under sections 302 (murder) and 114 (abettor present when offence is committed). He also said Shubhkaran Singh’s body will be taken to Khanauri before his cremation.
Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a government job for Shubhkaran Singh’s sister.
