As the Budget Session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha kicked off on Friday, the Punjab Government paid obituary references to nine people, including the farmer Shubkaran Singh who died during the farmers’ protest at Khanauri border.
It is pertinent to mention that the obituary references were paid to:
1. Dr. Baldev Raj Chawla, Former Deputy Speaker;
2. Sardar Ranjit Singh Talwandi, Ex-MLA;
3. Sardar Parkash Singh Garhdiwala, Ex-MLA;
4. Sardar Sohan Singh Bodal, Ex-MLA;
5. Martyr Ajay Kumar, Agniveer;
6. Martyr Harsimran Singh, Sepoy;
7. Martyr Gurpreet Singh, Gunner;
8. Martyr Jaspal Singh, Home Guard; and
9. Martyr Shubkaran Singh, Farmer.
Notably, Veteran BJP leader Dr. Baldev Raj Chawla (82) died after a brief illness on January 17, 2024, while the former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA from Raikot constituency Ranjit Singh Talwandi passed away at 67 on December 6, 2023; Former MLA Parkash Singh Garhdiwala passed away on December 8, 2023.
The Punjab Government also paid tribute the brave soldiers — Martyr Ajay Kumar, Martyr Harsimran Singh, Martyr Gurpreet Singh, and Martyr Jaspal Singh.
On the other hand, the Punjab Government also paid tribute to farmer Shubkaran Singh who died during the clash between farmers and police during the protest at Khanauri border. The Punjab government has also given Shubkaran the title of a martyr.
