Punjab farmers on protest: On Tuesday, security was increased at the inter-state borders of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh as farmers called for a protest in Chandigarh to seek compensation for flood-related losses. Farmers have announced a demonstration at Chandigarh’s Sector 17 parade field.
Farmers reported that several of their leaders were detained on Monday in various parts of Punjab, while others were detained in Ambala and Kurukshetra, Haryana, ahead of their planned protest.
Security officers have been stationed at all entry and exit points in Chandigarh to prevent farmers from accessing the city.
On Monday, a farmer died after being ran over by a tractor-trolley in Sangrur district, and at least five police officers were injured after farmers struggled with authorities over the “detention” of several farm leaders.
Farmers in North India, particularly Punjab, are demanding a special package of Rs 50,000 crore from the Centre for flood-related damages.
They are also seeking compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre for agricultural loss, Rs 5 lakh for a damaged dwelling, and Rs 10 lakh for the family of a person killed in floods.
