New Delhi/Srinagar, 16 April 2025: The Congress party is grappling with growing unrest in Jammu and Kashmir after the appointment of senior leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh as AICC Observer for the Union Territory.

AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal announced Singh’s appointment, assigning him the critical role of overseeing party affairs and discussions around the INC-NC coalition in J&K. Singh has been directed to work closely with the state in-charge and the PCC President.

However, instead of consolidating the party ahead of upcoming panchayat and municipal polls, the move has triggered fresh dissent within the J&K Congress unit.

Party insiders describe confusion over roles and a lack of clarity in strategy. A senior Congress leader from Jammu — a key figure during the previous INC-NC alliance — questioned:

“If Digvijay Singh is now the observer, then what exactly is the role of Nasir Hussain, the current J&K in-charge?”

Fueling the discontent further, a former J&K minister, speaking anonymously, voiced sharper criticism:

“Digvijay Singh is a political heavyweight. Nasir Hussain, despite being a Rajya Sabha MP, has never fought an election. His lack of electoral experience is a major concern for us.”

This internal rift has raised serious questions about the Congress high command’s confidence in its existing leadership in J&K. Some sources interpret Singh’s appointment as a tactical move to tighten control, while others see it as an indication of declining trust in Nasir Hussain’s leadership.

With elections around the corner, such infighting could cost the Congress dearly in the region. The party’s central leadership is now under mounting pressure to clarify its position and restore internal cohesion.

Whether this storm settles quickly — or spirals into a full-blown leadership crisis — remains to be seen.
