Walmart’s PhonePe launched an Android app store on 21 February. The firm’s homegrown Indus Appstore is betting on localisation to differentiate itself in the space dominated by tech giants Google and Apple.

To get more developers on board, a factor that will be key to its growth, Indus Appstore will allow them to choose any third-party payment gateway for in-app billing and they will also not be charged any commission if they use an external payment gateway. In recent months, local app developers and Google have been engaged in a tussle over Play Store policies and commission fees.

While the app store will introduce its own in-app billing and catalog solutions at a later date, developers will remain free to use the solutions of their choice, per the release.

In addition, the app store will provide developers with a self-publishing platform, localization services, tools for monitoring and growing their apps, and 24/7 customer support, the source’s said.
