Another batch of over 6,600 Amarnath pilgrims set off from Jammu city early on Sunday, braving rain and tight security, to begin their annual pilgrimage in Kashmir. An official confirmed this development.
Since the commencement of the 62-day-long yatra on July 1, more than 2.10 lakh devotees have already visited the sacred cave shrine of Amarnath, located at an altitude of 3,880 meters in the south Kashmir Himalayas.
According to the official, the 14th batch consisting of 6,684 pilgrims departed from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. They embarked on their journey to the valley in a convoy of 241 vehicles between 3.30 am and 3.55 am.
Despite moderate rainfall persisting for several hours and causing waterlogging in various parts of Jammu, the pilgrim convoy made its way towards the Pahalgam base camp in Anantnag and the Baltal base camp in Ganderbal district.
Out of the total number, 3,686 pilgrims traveled to the Pahalgam base camp in 132 vehicles, while 2,998 pilgrims headed for Baltal in 109 vehicles.
This latest dispatch brings the cumulative count of pilgrims leaving the Jammu base camp for the valley since June 30 to 86,865. It was on this day that the first batch of pilgrims was flagged off by Jammu & Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
