With the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) being just one day away, the income tax department has reported that over 6 crore tax returns have been filed for income earned in the 2022-23 fiscal year as of Sunday evening. This number has surpassed last year’s figure on the same date. The deadline for filing tax returns for the salaried class and those not requiring account audits is fixed on July 31, and it won’t be extended further.
The income tax department provided statistics indicating over 1.30 crore successful logins on the e-filing portal until 6.30 pm on Sunday. They have also made their helpdesk available 24×7 to assist taxpayers with ITR filing, tax payments, and related services through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media.
However, some Twitter users faced issues with the website running slowly or not working while filing their ITRs. The department advised them to “clear browser cache” and, if the problem persists, to email their details to orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in for assistance.
Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra urged all taxpayers to file their returns before July 31, expressing gratitude for the faster pace of ITR filing compared to the previous year and advising against waiting until the last moment or expecting any extensions.
If you miss the deadline, you can still file a ‘belated return,’ but it will be subjected to a penalty. Those who file before December 31 will face a fine of ₹5,000, and after that, the fine increases to ₹10,000.
After filing your ITR, remember to e-verify the return within 30 days to complete the process. You’ll receive a success message and a transaction ID on your mobile phone, and a confirmation email will be sent to your registered email address.
