No ‘dahi’ on curd packets in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka as order revoked

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Thursday revoked the order to rename curd packets as ‘dahi’ after non-Hindi speaking southern states, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, opposed the move and called it a form of “Hindi imposition”.

The FSSAI had issued a directive to the federation of milk producers in Tamil Nadu, asking them to change the labels of their curd packets from ‘curd’ in English and ‘thayir’ in Tamil to ‘dahi’ in Hindi. The directive also applied to other dairy products such as butter and cheese. The directive by FSSAI was opposed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and milk producers who said ‘nahi’ to ‘dahi’.
