Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament criticises MK Stalin's party

Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament: The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman referred to a 1989 event involving former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa as the opposition attempted to corner the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Parliament over the Manipur video episode and the crimes against women.

Nirmala Sitharaman responded to Kanimozhi, the leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), about crimes against women by saying, “About women, stripping women, humiliating women, and shaming women, all of us will have to feel really very serious. We must treat women’s suffering seriously, regardless of where it occurs—in Manipur, Delhi, or Rajasthan—and there should be no politics involved.

Nirmala Sitharaman described the incident that occurred on March 25, 1989, when Jayalalithaa’s saree was pulled in the Tamil Nadu Assembly during her speech in Parliament during the no-confidence motion.

Then, Jayalalithaa was the Leader of the Opposition rather than the Chief Minister. The Tamil Nadu Assembly removed Jayalalithaa’s sari. The DMK members seated there heckled and laughed at her since she was an opposition leader, according to Nirmala Sitharaman.

Nirmala Sitharaman attacked the DMK, a member of the opposition, saying, “You are talking about Kaurava Sabha, you are talking about Droupadi. Does DMK still remember Jayalalithaa? You humiliated her by yanking her saree.

During the discussion of the opposition’s no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government in the Lok Sabha, Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a statement.
