Following a car accident, Kiri Allan, the Justice Minister of New Zealand, resigned after facing allegations of reckless driving and refusing to comply with a police officer’s instructions, as reported by Radio New Zealand (RNZ), the country’s public-service radio broadcaster.
Subsequent to the incident on Sunday night, Allan was taken into police custody, and the collision reportedly occurred in Wellington.
In her statement, Allan declared an immediate resignation from all her positions.
Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, who had a conversation with Allan earlier, stated that she was not in a suitable condition to hold a ministerial warrant and confirmed that he accepted her resignation, as reported by RNZ.
According to the police statement, they were notified of a two-car collision on Evans Bay Parade in Roseneath just after 9 o’clock. One person was taken into custody and cooperated with the police investigation. The road was briefly blocked, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
Following the collision, Allan was held at Wellington Central Police station on charges of careless driving and resisting arrest before being released around one in the morning, according to Hipkins.
Hipkins expressed his opinion that it was unacceptable to accuse a justice minister of committing a crime and stated that Kiri Allan agreed with him. She informed him of her decision to resign from all her portfolios immediately, return home, and take time to consider her future in politics, which he accepted, as stated by RNZ.
