GOAT Neeraj Chopra: Neeraj Chopra has once more dominated the global scene. At the 2023 World Athletics Championships on Sunday night in Budapest, the face of Indian athletics threw the javelin into the air, where it landed at a tremendous distance of 88.17 metres, good enough for him to win the gold medal. In doing so, the first Indian to win an athletics gold medal at the Olympics simultaneously became the nation’s first gold medalist at the World Athletics Championships.
Chopra, who won the silver medal at the World Championships the year before, started out poorly but quickly rose to the top after throwing 88.17 metres on his second attempt, where he stayed for the rest of the competition. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, the current Commonwealth Games champion, came the closest to endangering Neeraj’s chances of winning the gold when he recovered from a slow start by throwing his best throw of 87.72 metres in his third try.
PM Modi sent Neeraj a heartfelt message on social media early on Monday morning to congratulate him on his impressive collection of gold medals.
Neeraj also became the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to hold an Olympic gold and a World Championships title simultaneously. Bindra had won the World Championships title when he was 23, and the Olympics gold at 25. He is also the third javelin thrower in the history of the discipline to achieve the same after Jan Zelezny of Czech Republic and Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway.
Neeraj hasn’t yet broken the 90-meter barrier, but hopefully it’s just a matter of time before he does. The Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 will begin in just 11 months, and Neeraj will compete as the reigning champion. And as supporters, we can only hope that he defends his title at the biggest sporting spectacle in style by throwing the javelin more than 90 metres.
