Neeraj Chopra is set to compete in his final event of the 2024 season at the prestigious Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 14. Despite dealing with a persistent groin injury throughout the year, the Indian javelin star has managed to deliver strong performances, including winning an Olympic silver and finishing second in two Diamond League meets.
Neeraj will aim to secure his second Diamond Trophy, the coveted prize awarded to the winner of the season finale. In 2022, he became the first Indian to win the Diamond Trophy but lost his title last year to Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, who is not competing this year. Neeraj, however, will still face tough opponents like Olympic bronze medalist Anderson Peters and Germany’s Julian Weber.
Chopra’s top three throws include a personal best of 89.94m, achieved at the 2022 Stockholm Diamond League. While he hasn’t yet reached the 90m mark, he came close this year, with a throw of 89.45m earning him a silver at the Paris Olympic Games. In that event, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem set an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97m.
As he prepares for the Diamond League Final, Neeraj hopes to break the elusive 90m barrier and cap off what has been an eventful season on a high note.
