The government intervened as tomato prices escalated, with online retailers selling them at around ₹120 to ₹130 per kg, and the retail market prices reaching as high as ₹150 per kg in some places. In response to this situation, the government directed NCCF and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) to procure tomatoes from surplus states and offer them at a reduced rate. Initially, physical retail sales were initiated at select locations for ₹90 per kg, which was further reduced to ₹80 per kg from July 16, and finally reaching ₹70 per kg. Now, this initiative is also extended to online platforms.
