The counting of votes for the Nagaland assembly election is currently underway after the state went to polls on Monday, with repolling taking place in four booths on Wednesday. According to exit polls, the NDPP-BJP alliance is expected to retain power and form the government for a second consecutive term, with a comfortable margin. In the previous 2018 election, the alliance won 30 seats – 18 for the regional party and 12 for the saffron party – and broke the 15-year rule of the Naga People’s Front with the help of two MLAs from the National Peoples’ Party, one from JD(U), and an Independent MLA. The Congress, which governed the state until 2003, has no members in the current house, but is expected to win at least two seats. The election also features four women candidates – Rosy Thomson of Congress, Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse of NDPP, and Kahuli Sema of BJP – who are competing in the polls from Tenning, Dimapur-III, Western Angami, and Atoizu respectively. All eyes are on the election results as the political landscape of Nagaland is set to be determined in the coming days.
