Meta gives third-party device manufacturers access to Quest operating system

For the first time, Meta Platforms, opens new tab, is sharing the operating system of its Quest headgear with competitors in the device manufacturing space, such as Microsoft, opens new tab, the company announced on Monday in an effort to increase its sway over the developing virtual and mixed reality market.

According to sources, the move would enable partner firms to develop their headsets utilizing Meta Horizon OS, a rebranded operating system that gives devices running it characteristics like gesture recognition, passthrough, scene interpretation, and spatial anchors.

The social media company said partners Asus, opens new tab and Lenovo, opens new tab would use the operating system to build devices tailored for particular activities. Meta is also using it to make a limited edition version of the Quest headset “inspired by” Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console, according to the company’s statement.

The move underscores Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ambition to own the computational platform that powers virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) devices, similar to the way Alphabet’s Google, opens new tab became a key player in the smartphone market by making its mobile OS Android open source.
